Science Blast 2024

6th Mar 2024

"Future Proof your Farm" was the title for the 6th class science project at this year's ESB Science Blast exhibition in the RDS, Dublin.

The students of Timahoe NS combined 2 projects from their school science fair to take a detailed look at mitigation and adaptation to environmental issues on farms.  The climate crisis is a feature of the world we live in today. This February was reported as the mildest and wettest on record in recent times- the children interviewed farmers & used Teagasc reports to compile a list of recommendations.

Former Deputy President of the IFA Brian Rushe shared valuable information on sustainability in Farming. He cited Social sustainability, Economic sustainability & Environmental sustainability as three vital area to ensure farms are Future Proof.

Tips included:
Using renewable resources.
Changing feed for cows to reduce Methane emissions ( Nop 3 Trials)
Growing more Clover to reduce Nitrates.
Use less pesticides
No Mow zones.
Care for the hedgerows as a carbon store.
Invest in Robotics- feeders, milkers, mowers.
Genetic Editing- breed hardier dairy cows and ensure out potatoe crop can with stand the change in climate.

Our Judge was from Teagasc and he was so impressed with the knowledge and interest the Timahoe students shared.

Children visited lots of interesting stands and the day was topped off with burgers and icecreams in Mc Donalds.

Well done everyone!
